Court-Mandated Rehab Program
Press Release 2010-06-11143
Beginning in the late 1980s, some states and local areas
rethought their approach to drug offenders and developed
drug courts in response to the overlap between substance
abuse and crime. This new approach has been helping the
court system to target individuals whose major problems
are related to drug abuse.
Since then, when substance abusers are arrested and
appear in court, judges sometimes order the person to
go through drug rehabilitation. Drug rehabilitation
(often drug rehab or just rehab) is a term for the processes
of medical and/or psychotherapeutic treatment, for dependency
on psychoactive substances such as alcohol, prescription
drugs, and so-called street drugs such as cocaine, heroin
or amphetamines. The general intent is to enable the
patient to cease substance abuse, in order to avoid
the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical
consequences that can be caused, especially by extreme
abuse.
So now this Drug Rehabilitation is called Court Ordered
Addiction Treatment. People convicted of minor drug
offenses may be sentenced to rehabilitation instead
of prison, and those convicted of driving while intoxicated
are sometimes required to attend some kind of addiction
treatment program.
Court-ordered treatment is also known as coerced treatment.
The theory behind court-ordered treatment is that substance
abusers lack internal, or personal, motivation necessary
to stop using drugs. The judge's order provides an external
motivation for the person to enter treatment in order
to change his or her behavior.
