Intensive Outpatient Programs for Substance Abuse Treatment
An Intensive Outpatient Program is a day or nighttime
treatment program that employs an integrated and
individualized schedule of recognized substance
abuse and mental health treatment modalities.
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed
as an alternative to inpatient treatment or as an
aftercare program, upon the successful completion
of an inpatient program. An intensive outpatient
program begins with a psychological evaluation,
a psychosocial assessment, and other assessments
used to identify individual needs. The therapeutic
approach includes an individual treatment plan specifically
designed to address the issues each person brings
to treatment. Individual, group, and family therapy
are the cornerstone of a comprehensive program.
Additional therapeutic services are offered including
Trauma, Self-Harm, Eating Disorders, Marriage and
Family, Adolescent Behavior, Mental Health and Depression
Therapies, as well as other therapeutic approaches
as needed.
The goals of the Intensive Outpatient programs are
to provide psychiatric and/or substance abuse treatment
to individuals in a less restrictive setting than
an inpatient unit. The benefits of this type of
care include: lessening the disruption of social,
family, and community ties; allowing the patient
to test new skills in a more neutral environment
than an inpatient hospital setting; providing treatment
milieu that provides flexibility in the numbers
of treatment days per week, thus allowing a patient
to pursue other activities, such as shortening of
the inpatient stay, or preventing the need for full
hospitalization.
