Rogue Pharmacies Fueling Oxycodone Addiction
in Florida
Press Release Oct. 2011
With Floridian pharmacies purchasing more than 421 million
doses of oxycodone every year, the state a Florida in
looking at a statewide epidemic as more and more individuals
manage to get their hands on large quantities of this
drug and overdose.
Heather Belleme, 23, successfully hid her oxycodone
addiction from her family until it was too late.
In March she entered a drugstore with a prescription
and managed to obtain 168 oxycodone pills for the price
of 700 dollars. Belleme died four days later after overdosing
on her pills, leaving her family completely devastated.
Mark Trouville, currently in charge of the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Administration's Florida field office, strongly
believes rogue pharmacies should be strictly monitored
and held accountable for mishandling drugs, as many
provide the public with unnecessary and deadly quantities
of prescription medication in order to make money.
“When we talk about pharmacists that are doing
the wrong thing, we're talking about a pattern of consistent
abuse that is absolutely motivated by greed and not
by the good" Trouville stated.
Rogue pharmacies are known to work with unscrupulous
doctors in order to illegally distribute millions of
pills to addicts and drug dealers, all while making
large sums of money. The Drug Enforcement Administration
plans to crack down on these pharmacies as well as identify
physicians who aid in the illegal distribution of prescription
drugs.
