Prescription Drugs - The New Gateway Drug

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Press Release) Manhattan, New York, September 8, 2010 The New Gateway Drug and the Need for Treatment - Over the years we have all come across the term “gateway” drug. Usually in the past when this phrase was use it was to refer to marijuana. Could this be changing with the times? As new drugs arise and new fads come into play, is this term “gate way” drug being applied to something besides marijuana? Well according to the research, the answer is yes.

The University of Buffalo conducted a research study on people with addiction. The research showed that almost fifty percent reported that they first became addicted to drugs from abusing prescription medication. With only twenty percent reporting that they first got addicted by using street drugs. Most of the interviewed patients said that they became addicted after using their friend’s leftover prescription meds or from their parents medicine cabinets. After becoming addicted to drugs from prescription drugs, they started to buy street drugs like heroine because they are less expensive than prescription drugs and are stronger. They report that they continue to use drugs to feel normal, ease the feel of pain or stress, or to feel better. For this reason there is the notation that the term gateway drug is being referred to for prescription drugs.

The drug trend has been ever so increasing of prescription drug abuse. Using prescription drugs illegally such as Oxycontin, has been on the rise. Prescription medicine is becoming a progressive way to abuse substances such as opiates and the gateway to dangerous drug addiction. The problem of addiction is even furthered by the abuse of prescription medication because now it is leading to a higher risk for the person to use, abuse, and become addicted to heroin.

Drugs in general are highly addictive and addiction is a medical condition. A user is trying to achieve the same high that they felt on their first use, however, a user can never get the same high. It only takes one use of a drug to become addicted. It only takes one use to overdose or die. Like all medical conditions, treatment is necessary.
