A recovering drug-addict and her son make a pact
to reach their educational goals. According to the
Today Show, anchor Ann Curry “chronicles the
inspirational story of Cindy Preston and her 8-year-old
son Jeremy, who are battling tremendous obstacles
to get an education. Cindy's addiction began when
she lost an apartment cleaning job in Arizona. "She
was offered the drug crystal meth and she took it.
Even after she gave birth to Jeremy, the drugs proved
stronger than a mother's love," Ann explains.
Cindy's mother Sharon took Jeremy to raise the boy
in her home in Ohio, but it was no fairy tale. The
young boy Jeremy was failing to reach the second
grade, after two years of attempts. Once Cindy completed
her jail time sentence last years, Cindy returned
to her son and her family in Ohio. With his mother's
support, Jeremy has passed the first grade while
Cindy pursues her dream of becoming a nurse.”
Recovering from addiction is often a difficult
journey, with many obstacles and interferences.
Although the 12 Steps to recovery requires each
person successfully complete each step, this writer
also embraces the belief that individual therapeutic
skills need to be applied, to help each person
begin to build a recovering foundation.
The very first obstacle in recovery is overcoming
the desire to use drugs or alcohol. Identifying
the triggers that lead to drug use or alcohol
use, is an important task to master and the key
to the beginning of overcoming the desire to relapse
to previous addictive behaviors. Once an individual
begins to identify triggers to addiction, the
next task is to develop healthy coping skills
and problem solving skills for daily life challenges.
These two tasks are extremely helpful in building
a strong foundation for each person’s journey
in recovery from drug addiction or alcoholism.
Recovering from drug addiction or alcoholism
is a life-time process, requiring dedication and
endurance. There are many mothers like Cindy,
who are struggling to find their way, after the
drugs are gone, the damages are obvious, and children
are I need of maternal love, care, and direction.
Many women seek the assistance of professionals
in a residential addiction treatment program.
The Cove Center for Recovery, offers a residential
addiction treatment center for mothers who are
working to recovery from drug addiction or alcohol
addiction. The Cove Center For Recovery
is a therapeutically based program, specifically
designed to meet the needs of recovering women
in need of individual therapy, family therapy,
coping skills, structure, and guidance, as they
turn their lives around and choose to live in
a world free of drugs and the consequences of
addiction.
