| Bobby grew up
as an angry and rebellious young man, that could
not trust anyone. He didn't do well in school
and life got harder by the day for him. The fact
that he started drinking at 9 didn't help his
situation either.
At 13, Bobby was a full blown alcoholics and at
18 started he started injecting heroin. He went
to jail for 10 years at 21. He says about his
drugs "I lived to use and used to live".
In prison he realized he could not continue living
the life he had been. He got clean and started
attending college classes. After prison he stopped
injecting but still was drinking.
He had rationalized for himself that he was not
an addict any more, because he was not injecting.
Alcohol took its toll on Bobby and finally on
January 28, 1985 he hit the bottom. On that day
after contemplating suicide, he recalls three
words he said; "God help me". That was
the turning point in Bobby's life. He had a spiritual
awakening. He started long-term therapeutic community
program and started working on his addiction as
a disease. He followed the suggestions and got
a sponsor, worked the steps, attended meetings
and got involved in various services. He completed
the program in 15 months, got a job working as
a counselor in a rehab facility and shared his
experiences and pains with others trying to recover.
He went from orientation counselor to head counselor
and to senior lead counselor. in 1995 he graduated
from Barry University with comma sum laude and
got his masters degree. This lead to further promotions
to clinical coordinator, later to quality assistance
manager and finally to program director.
"I wake up every day grateful to
be alive and clean and look forward to going to
work to do what I feel God's plan for me has always
been".
Robert Tarnowicz is saving lives every day.
