Maintain your sobriety this holiday!

The holiday season is upon us and with all the festivities come the overwhelming temptation to use. Whether to escape the stress or pressures of the holidays many recovering from substance abuse problems tend to shy away from the holidays. The Cove Center for Recovery is here to tell you that you too can enjoy the holidays and maintain your sobriety without fear of a relapse!

How to maintain your sobriety during the holidays:

1.Create a plan 

The saying it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed rings very true here. It is better to have a plan in action rather than to show up with no plan in place and totally wing it. Your sobriety is something you’ve worked hard to achieve and maintain. Similar to anything else in life you shouldn’t lose all your work for temporary pleasure. Just like any other day of the year the holidays require the same amount of planning and care to maintain your sobriety.

One important aspect of this planning stage is that you do not push past your limit. Do not leave yourself open to temptation. Create a plan for yourself in regards to how you will handle situations in which your sobriety is being tested. Here are few examples of things your plan should include:

  • Set a curfew for yourself
  • Bring a sober friend to the festivities
  • Utilize your sobriety toolbox when needed
  • Have an exit strategy

2.Stick to sober activities

Who says Christmas has to only be spent with family? For those who do not have a supportive family or group of friends skipping the event altogether might be your best course of action. If you are not comfortable maintaining your sobriety in their company it is best not to push your limits. No amount of family duty is worth compromising your current state of progress. Instead, opt out by creating your own sober plans! Invite fellow sober friends or supportive family members to your very own Christmas event. Or attend holiday events held by your local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) groups.

3.Stand your ground

If you choose to brave the perils of the holiday season the best thing you can do for yourself is to stand your ground. No matter how much of a hard time you may be having to adjust to a sober holiday never let the outside forces influence you to jeopardize your recovery. The holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family and friends to enjoy each others company. Unfortunately, for many in recovery, it is just another stressful event that can put their recovery at risk. Take the fear out of the holidays and embrace and enjoy your sobriety.
