Start the new year with these three recovery resolutions!
With the new year rolling in the Cove Center for Recovery decided to share three easy resolutions to assist you in your recovery for the new year. These resolutions will help maintain a healthy and long term recovery.
New Year resolutions for people in recovery:
1. Attend Meetings
Every client leaving treatment has heard the familiar rule of going to 90 meetings in 90 days. This is a great model to follow into the new year. But may be unrealistic and set yourself up for failure. Instead, pick a reasonable amount of meetings to attend within a week. This helps to put your task into perspective and makes it easier to achieve. We recommend attending at least 2 recovery meetings or groups within a week. Meetings or groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are a great way to connect with like-minded people in recovery. It also allows you to express your woes about addiction in a safe and judgment-free environment.
2. Create a relapse plan
Recovery is not a straight and narrow path. For some, relapse is a part of recovery and you can learn valuable lessons from the past. In lieu of this reality, devise a plan in case the worst case scenario pans out. A relapse plan can include having a family member or friend monitor your behaviors. It can also involve creating a personal checklist of things not to do that negatively impact your recovery. So have a plan in place to counter the unforeseen pitfalls and help you get back on the right track.
3. Make use of your sobriety toolbox
The sobriety toolbox is comprised of techniques and skills that will help you when you are facing the triggers of stress or addiction. Utilizing this toolbox will help keep you on the path of sobriety and away from relapse. Put together your favorite and most effective coping skills and get ready to use them in the new year.
Extra Credit: Pick up a new positive hobby
In the new year, a positive hobby will serve as a great way to curb your addiction. Taking time aside to focus on a singular objective you enjoy will no doubt boost your mood and help keep you away from substance abuse. Hobbies like yoga are beneficial for those in recovery and the best place to meet new and interesting people that you have something in common.
Why are resolutions important in recovery
Resolutions are a great way for you to keep track of your recovery. Many start drinking or using drugs when returning home due to a lack of progress and maintenance. Recovery may seem like an easier thing to accomplish while in treatment as it is a controlled environment. However, upon returning home some find it difficult to transition back into their lives while being sober. Resolutions make monitoring your recovery easy. It also helps foster development and growth.
