HALO AT THE COVE CENTER FOR RECOVERY
Anorexia, Bulimia, and Overeating are eating
disorders. An eating disorder is an addiction.
Eating Disorders are a result of a behavior known
as “self-medicating” behavior. Eating
disorders are serious health conditions
that can be both physically and emotionally destructive.
Professional help is always recommended. If not
identified or treated in their early stages, eating
disorders can become chronic, debilitating, and
even life-threatening. Characteristics of a person
struggling with an eating disorder may include:
low self esteem, depression, feelings of loss of
control, feelings of worthlessness, identity issues,
family communication problems and difficulty coping
with emotions. Anorexia is easier to visually recognize
and more commonly characterized by extreme weight
loss or extreme underweight physical appearance.
For the individual struggling with an eating
disorder, personal and social relationships
are neglected, as well as work and other life experiences.
The anorexic or bulimic person does not recognize
the addiction and is often confronted by loved ones
or a physician, before directing attention to the
behavior.
EATING DISORDER TREATMENT
- EATING DISORDER HELP
An Eating Disorder is an addiction.
It begins as a “self-medicating” behavior,
surrounding weight loss and food issues. It progresses
to an obsession and an addiction. Eating Disorders
are treatment worthy, much the same as drug addiction.
Eating Disorders include behavior demonstrated in
a Cycle of Addiction. The root causes of drug and
alcohol addiction are the same or similar to eating
disorders. Instead of using drugs and alcohol to
self-medicate, an Anorexic or Bulimic uses starvation
and excessive exercise to self medicate, in an effort
to resolve inner-personal challenges, struggles,
or conflicts. Eating disorders may also
be co-occurring with drug or alcohol addiction or
a result or consequence of drug or alcohol addiction.
The most effective and long-lasting treatment for
eating disorders begins with an appropriate assessment
of the individual. If hospitalization is required,
as in acute cases, individuals and their family
and/or friends are strongly encouraged to seek immediate
direction of a physician. The physician may require
the individual enter a hospital for stabilization.
Once stabilization has occurred an addiction
treatment program is recommended. Entrance
into an addiction treatment center is recommended,
due to the complexity of root causes for eating
disorders and the addictive nature of an eating
disorder. The treatment center should be one that
focuses on all aspects of eating disorders, psychotherapy,
recovery, and aftercare.

CAUSES OF EATING DISORDERS:
There are as many causes of eating
disorders as there are differing personalities,
life histories and experiences, medical challenges,
personal challenges, etc. However, eating disorders
may begin with preoccupations with food and weight,
but they are most often about much more than food.
An eating disorder is a “self-medicating”
behavior, manifested through poor body image and
weight concerns.
