In recognition of National Prevention Week (NPW), the Cove Center for Recovery – a fully comprehensive dual-diagnosis substance abuse treatment center pulled out and dusted off a video from its archives about teen drug prevention. The rebroadcast of this video was extremely relevant given the fact that it was NPW.
NPW was rolled out by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA). The government agency is within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is charged with leading the public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.
The Cove Center for Recovery was featured on the day-time, health-style national television show Ask Dr. Nandi. One of the Cove Center for Recovery’s former clients – Chris Patterson – was in recovery from a flakka addiction and replied to a question from Dr. Nandi about what he thinks we as a society should do about preventing drug abuse during the formative teen years. Watch the entire interview with Chris, Karen Corcoran-Walsh, owner and founder of the Cove Center for Recovery and television host Dr. Nandi.
Below is a clip from the television interview
Here is the transcript from the interview
Dr. Nandi: What can other parents like myself do to prevent teens from doing what you did (abusing the drug flakka)?
Chris Patterson: Educate them. Like in my school we never really had someone come in and show us the damage that drugs can do to you and lead to. I mean if you walked me through let’s say a jail when I was younger and said look drugs and alcohol can get you to this place, it would probably scare me straight.
Dr. Nandi: You are on your way. You have a way to go, but that’s awesome.
We believe Chris knocked the difficult question out-of-the-park with his sharp and unrehearsed response.
